Medela has partnered with the NEC Society to support NEC Awareness Month this May and raise awareness about necrotizing enterocolitis, one of the leading causes of death in premature infants. The initiative focuses on advancing research, education, advocacy, and support for families affected by this devastating condition.

Research has shown that a mother’s own milk can reduce the risk of NEC by as much as 58%, highlighting the critical role human milk plays in protecting vulnerable infants. Through its ongoing commitment to human milk research and neonatal care, Medela continues to support efforts aimed at improving outcomes for babies in the NICU.

As part of the campaign, Medela encouraged employees, healthcare professionals, families, and advocates around the world to participate in the NEC Awareness Run & Walk, bringing communities together to raise awareness and funds for NEC research and family support programs.

Medela’s partnership with the NEC Society extends beyond fundraising. Since becoming an Industry Champion in 2024, the company has supported educational initiatives, distributed family resource materials through hospitals, and contributed funding to advance NEC research and awareness efforts. Together, the organizations share a common goal: creating a future where every infant has access to the resources and support needed for the healthiest possible start in life.
